DAY TRIPS From St. Simons Island

Day trips in Coastal Georgia are only a few short miles anyway when driving . If you don`t want a day trip in the car , your choice can be a boat , or bike .Either way you`ll discover the treasures of Coastal Georgia .
Kingsland is known as Georgia`s Island connector for it`s location , It`s approximation to Cumberland Island National Seashore , The Okefenokee National Wildlife refuge , and a host of other natural wonders . Just 45 minutes south of Saint Simons Island , just off I-95 at exit 3 and 6 .
Georgia`s Historic Colonial Coastal , some of the nations oldest history , is an integral part of this area . Kingsland itself is listed in the National Register of historic places .
CUMBERLAND ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE : WAS establisted as a National Seashore in 1972 . Share your beach walk on wide , white beaches with wild ponies grazing amidst the windswept dunes . Inland , majestic live oaks and palmetto forests provide shelter for a tremendous variety of coastal birdes and other animals . History buffs will be charmed by Cumberland`s colorful past beginning about 4000 years ago when the Indians lived there . In 1881 , Thomas Carnegie , brother of financier Andrew , purchased an estate on the south end of the island , where the ruins still stand .
The ferry at St. Marys , I-95 exit 3 makes 3 trips a day so you can stay half a day or all day .
OKEFENOKEE ADVENTURES :" THE LAND OF TREMBLING EARTH " is an easily accessible wilderness encompassing 400,000 acres of wildlife , including several endangered species .
OKEFENOKEE ADVENTURES is at the national wildlife refuge`s eastern entrance in Folkston , Georgia . " GATOR HOLES " dot the lilly pad prairies and exotic birds are often sited .
DARIEN & McINTOSH COUNTY : Darien is the second oldest planned city in Georgia . Take a tour starting at the riverfront boardwalk , travel out to the RIDGE to see the picturesque Victorian - style homes of former timber barons or vist the 12,000 acre ALTAMAHA WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA , a bird watching and photographic paradise . FORT KING GEORGE , the southren outpost of the BRITISH EMPIRE in NORTH AMERICA , has been reconstructed using old records and drawing . A museum follows it`s history from GUALE IND
INDIAN days to 19 th century sawmilling . In addition to the fort replica , remains of three sawmills and tabby ruins are still visible. Located in DARIEN , three miles east of I - 95 at exit 49 , or turn right into downtown off Hwy. 17 and follow the signs .
SAPELO ISLAND : is Georgia`s fourth largest barrier island . SAPELO`S 16,000 acres are managed by the Department of National Resources which oversees the habitat of pines and hardwoods forest , salt march , and more than two miles of wide , sandy beaches . Over half of SAPELO`S upland acres are designated the R.J. Reynolds Wildlife Management Area , named for the island `s last private owner . DNR guided tours also focus on evidence of SAPELO`S earlier inhabitants including tabby ruins of a sugar plantation , the R.J.Reynolds mansion , and the Gullah Community of Hog Hammocks .
